A deep-sea trawler runs one campaign after another with port calls of only a few days. All the maintenance has to fit into those windows: oil changes, winches, fishing hydraulics, refrigeration. Without a workload prepared before arrival, with parts ordered and contractors booked, the call stretches and the next campaign slips. When the maintenance plan is driven by engine hours and by the history of each item of equipment, the technical call is prepared from the sea rather than once alongside.
Navigation permit, fishing licence, safety surveys, crew tickets and medical fitness: one expired document and the vessel stays alongside with the crew ashore. Companies working internationally, in Morocco, Senegal or Mauritania, also have several national regimes to satisfy at once. Centralising the documents with alerts at 90, 60 and 30 days brings a permanent risk back to an office routine.
The chief engineer who knows these engines by heart will eventually sign off. If he takes twenty years of history with him, what failed, what was modified, which supplier delivers quickly, the company starts again from nothing. Every job recorded builds a technical memory that stays with the company.

During the campaign the second engineer logged the meters on the mobile app, with no network, and flagged a temperature drift on the refrigeration plant. Ashore, the fleet manager received it as soon as the app synchronised: the work order is created, the refrigeration contractor booked for the following morning, and the parts for the 500-hour service on the port engine are waiting in the store, ordered automatically when stock fell below its threshold.
Wednesday evening, both jobs are closed in the CMMS with photographs and signatures. The navigation permit, checked in the background, remains valid for six months and the renewal alert will fire in good time. Thursday, four in the morning: the vessel sails after forty-eight hours alongside, exactly as planned.
